What Is the Best Build in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
The strongest early-to-mid build is not one tree — it is one character that fights well in both halves of the day. You are human by day, vampire by night, so the build that wins carries its skills across the form swap instead of idling for twelve hours. That means Swordmaster as the backbone (its abilities work in both forms), a Vampirism claw kit for night, and a thin slice of Witchcraft for ranged damage while your markings are up.
It all runs on one stat: as Jay Dunna puts it, stamina is DPS — run out and you are probably dead. First points raise the pool, the playstyle revolves around the directional block, and everything else stacks on top. New to the combat? The /guides/beginner-guide/ covers the day/night loop this build sits inside.

How the Three Skill Trees Stack Into One Build
Before spending anything, know when each tree is usable — this is the part that trips people up:
- Witchcraft — daytime only. The spells need Coen’s witch markings, which heal away at night. A handful of passive perks on the left of the tree (crafting, harvesting, merchant prices) still count after dark.
- Vampirism — night only, because the abilities require the vampire (Valkyrie) form.
- Swordmaster — usable whenever, though some abilities are weapon-dependent.
Unlocking is gated three ways, each costing the scarcest resource in the game. Beyond skill points (from leveling and quests), some ranks burn in-game hours (hourglass icon), Witchcraft and Swordmaster skills need a manual you must actually find, and Vampirism skills need a corruption level raised by drinking blood. Budget time against the /guides/30-day-time-system/ before a buying spree; the full node list lives on /guides/skill-trees/, so this page is only about which nodes earn a slot in a real build.

The Damage Engine: Stamina, Directional Block, Perfect Riposte
Combat here is directional — you block and strike from specific sides, and the game telegraphs each attack’s direction on screen. The whole damage loop hangs off one perk: Perfect Riposte. After you perfect-block a red-shielded attack, a hit symbol with a red arrow flashes; hold that direction and attack for a critical directional hit. Both walkthroughs treat this as the core of the kit.
Everything before it keeps you alive long enough to riposte. Dump early points into Endless Effort to grow the stamina bar, then take the block-reduction perk so holding guard is cheaper. Counterattack and the crit-focused passives then stack flat damage onto the very blocks you will be doing constantly.

Which Swordmaster Abilities to Take First
Swordmaster abilities cost one or two activation charges, and both sources converge on the same two picks:
- Charge (1 charge) — closes distance, stuns for a couple of seconds, and applies bleed (a guaranteed bleed once leveled). Crucially it works with your vampire claws, so you never have to swap weapons mid-fight to use it.
- Artery Strike (2 charges) — one massive blow at 450% weapon damage with a ~10% instant-kill chance, both of which scale with points. Devastating on elites and bosses, but it needs a real weapon, not claws.
Dirty Trick (a free opening stun) and Broad Swing (a two-charge AoE sweep) are fine, but Charge + Artery Strike is the IGN guide’s recommended two-slot setup. On perks, take Sustained Focus early for a second activation charge, and level Second Skin I to wear medium armour without the under-leveled stat debuff.

Night Kit: Vampirism Claws, Voracious Bite and Death from Above
When the sun sets, the sword stays sheathed and the claws come out. Two abilities define the night half:
- Voracious Bite — Coen teleports behind an enemy, drains their health and restores his own. You get it early; the advice from both captures is to pour points into it immediately, because it is your main heal as a vampire.
- Death from Above — an uninterruptible plunge that one-shots ordinary enemies from height and still lands solid damage on bosses. In a game with no real stealth, this is the closest you get to a clean opening kill.
Perk-wise, Nourishing Blood (more health per drink), Endless Hunger (more health segments) and Razor Sharp Claws are the cheap wins. Jay Dunna also rates Piercing Shriek as a sleeper pick — it stuns, then reflects a portion of incoming damage back for a window, and he reports it working on most bosses. The form mechanics (feeding, corruption, hunger) are unpacked on /guides/vampire-powers/.

Gear and Consumables That Hold the Build Together
A build is more than skills. Both captures hunt the same stat lines: extra damage against supernatural enemies, reduced attack/dodge stamina cost, and crit chance / damage. Jay Dunna leans on a low-level Durand-style silver sword for exactly that — the weapon side is ranked on /guides/best-weapons/ and /items/legendary-weapons/. For armour, Second Skin I unlocks medium sets cleanly; heavier builds wait for Second Skin 2 (locations on /guides/armor-sets/).
Do not skip the alchemy wheel: consumables run for several time slots, food is your cheap daytime heal, and crafting oils from loot you already carry is the difference between a build that sustains and one that gasses out.

Getting Around: Haste and the Wolf
There are no mounts as of patch 1.0.0. Mobility is a skill pick, and both guides say grab it the moment the story lets you:
- Haste (human) — the bottom-right Witchcraft ability that lets human Coen sprint at superhuman speed.
- Shapeshift (vampire) — the matching Vampirism ability that turns night Coen into a wolf running at the same clip.
They level independently, and one point in each is plenty. It is the biggest quality-of-life upgrade in the build — the 30 days go fast and half your time is spent crossing the map.
