FAQ

Can you beat Pieter in the Like Father, Like Son duel?
Yes. The capture shows Coen draining Pieter's boss bar until Pieter is knocked to the ground, and the duel ends with Coen standing over his fallen father asking 'Had enough?' before Pieter gets up unhurt.
Is the Pieter fight a real boss fight or a cutscene?
It plays as a real fight: a labelled boss bar appears, damage numbers pop off Pieter, and the game interrupts with an unblockable-attack tutorial. It ends without anyone dying — Pieter gets up and the quest continues as a long conversation.
What is the training duel with Pieter for?
Winning it is how Coen proves his mettle in Pieter's eyes ('Well, you have proven your mettle, haven't you?'). Only then will Pieter sit down and explain that Vladimir is working with men from Svartrau to rise up against Brencis, and that he wants Pieter to lead the village men back into the silver mines.
What happens if you lose the training duel against Pieter?
Not documented. The source capture only shows the winning side of the duel, so whether it can be lost — and what happens if it is — is not stated anywhere on screen.

Who Is Pieter in The Blood of Dawnwalker?

Pieter, Retired Sellsword is a duel boss in The Blood of Dawnwalker — a father testing his own son with live steel. The game prints his full title above the boss health bar the moment the duel begins, and the quest carrying it is “Like Father, Like Son”. Pieter wakes the player character, Coen, at dawn, marches him up to a ruined hillside arena, and spars with him until the bar runs dry. Beating him matters less than what the scene unlocks — only after the duel does he sit down and unpack the rebellion plot driving this stretch of the story.

The whole write-up is rebuilt from a single clean gameplay capture (ScereBro PSNU); what it does not demonstrate — numeric HP, rewards, a loss condition — is flagged as not documented, not guessed.

How the “Like Father, Like Son” Duel Starts

The quest opens before sunrise in the family cabin. Pieter leans over the bed to wake Coen — “Let’s go, Coen,” reads the subtitle — and the dialogue box offers choices such as “Dad, if you want to talk about this…”, which Pieter brushes off before heading out.

Outside, the tracker in the top-right corner names the quest outright — “Like Father, Like Son” — with the active objective “Follow Pieter”, a separate “Complete your chores” line, and a timed “Train with Pieter” entry. Pieter leads the way up a rocky path above the village to open ground ringed with ruined stone walls.

The Pieter Boss Fight: How the Training Duel Plays Out

At the arena the banter stops: “Let’s see what you remember,” Pieter says, and a long red boss bar slides in across the top of the screen with a skull marker at its left end — the same treatment any proper boss gets. The bar is divided into segments by small notches, and it is the only health readout the duel gives: no numeric HP value appears anywhere.

A plain training sword and a sellsword’s habits — no magic, no phase changes. The duel begins at 1:34

The duel itself is clean and readable. Blows land both ways — one mid-fight frame catches a 59 damage number popping off Pieter — and the game pauses the action to teach its core defensive rule: “Some Attacks can’t be Blocked. Enemy target indicator changes into a skull during such Attacks. Use Dodge to avoid Unblockable Attacks.” In that same frame a red skull indicator floats beside Pieter mid-lunge, marking exactly such an attack.

Popup and skull indicator share the frame — the duel doubles as a defensive-combat lesson. Watch the exchange at 1:43

Pieter presses forward in multi-hit chains; the winning answer the footage shows is the one the tutorial just taught — dodge the marked swings, then step in during his recovery. His boss bar visibly drains segment by segment as the duel wears on.

Half the bar is gone — a real attrition fight, not a timed cutscene. Watch the dodge at 1:59

When the last segment empties, Pieter goes down and Coen stands over him: “Had enough?” — with the follow-up, spoken in the capture, “I could carry on. But I’ve seen enough.” Pieter gets up unhurt, and his son’s “What the hell, Dad? You came at me like you wanted to kill me” is answered with a shrug: “Aye, that’s what happens in a fight.” The win condition is simply emptying the bar; nobody dies at the end of it.

What the Duel Unlocks: Vladimir, Svartrau and the Silver Mines

“Well, you have proven your mettle, haven’t you?” — with the test passed, Pieter finally has the talk he waved off at dawn, and the scene turns into the quest’s real payload. Sitting by the tree, he lays it out: “Vladimir… He’s in cahoots with some men from Svartrau. They plan to rise up against Brencis. Soon.” (Spelling read letter-by-letter from the rendered subtitle — auto-captions mangle it as “Skalitz”; it matches the city of /bosses/xanthe/. Brencis later gets his own fight — see /bosses/brencis/.)

Vladimir’s ask is concrete: Pieter should lead the village men back into the silver mines and “fight our way in.” The on-screen reply options include “People say the mines are haunted.”, and Pieter waves the haunting stories off as gossip spread to keep people away from the workings. His wife has been given herbs so she will survive the Mass, and a hundred armed men are stationed just up the pass. “I told Vladimir I need time to think it over,” he admits — the duel does not lock the story’s decision in.

The scene’s bleakest line seals the setting’s power structure: “But here we are. Cattle for the vrakhiri.” — the game renders the ruling court’s name lowercase on screen (the site capitalizes it as the Vrakhiri). Shortly after, Pieter calls it: “We’re done here” — get home before dusk. Coen’s “See you then, Dad,” closes the quest. What Coen does next in the wider campaign is beyond this capture, but his sword work here draws on the unlocks covered in /guides/skill-trees/, and the allies who can fight beside you elsewhere are compared in /guides/companions/.
