FAQ

How do you increase Corruption in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
Drink blood — that is the only way. Polygon is explicit: 'There's only one way to level up corruption in The Blood of Dawnwalker: drink blood.' You do it with the Voracious Bite ability on humans and animals (in combat or from Focus mode), or by drinking vials of blood that restore your vampiric health. Feeding on larger targets gives more Corruption.
What does Corruption unlock?
It is the Vampirism tree's gating currency. VGC explains that 'many abilities in the Vampirism tree cannot be fully upgraded or even unlocked until you increase your Corruption' — the wolf Shapeshift, for example, is gated behind Corruption level 1. Raising Corruption is what turns night Coen into a real damage dealer instead of a sword user who happens to be awake after dark.
Do you lose anything by having high Corruption?
Not in combat — VGC calls it a stat 'you should shy away from, but actually, increasing your Corruption stat is a good idea.' The real risk is social: at low health in vampire form, a hunger option can hijack NPC dialogue and force Coen to feed (killing them). Keep your health topped up before talking to anyone important, and VGC notes there 'won't be many consequences' if you do.
What is the fastest way to farm Corruption?
Feed on the biggest targets you can find, and interrupt the blood transports and stores belonging to Brencis's Boyars — VGC confirms you can collect and drink that blood yourself to 'greatly increase' your Corruption rate. The Hastened Corruption perk then multiplies how fast the meter climbs.

What Is a Corruption Build in The Blood of Dawnwalker?

A corruption build is not a fourth skill tree — it is a Vampirism-first playstyle that treats Corruption as your main progression meter. You are human by day and vampire by night (the form split is unpacked on /guides/vampire-powers/), and the night half of your kit is locked behind how far you have pushed Corruption. So this build spends its effort feeding on purpose, racing to raise the level that unlocks and upgrades the Vampirism nodes you actually want.

Why lean on it? VGC frames the whole mental model: Corruption “seems like something you should shy away from, but actually, increasing your Corruption stat is a good idea… in terms of game mechanics, Corruption is making you more powerful.” Unlike the Swordmastery and Witchcraft trees — whose top ranks are gated behind consumable manuals (see /items/swordmastery-manuals/) — Vampirism has no item to hunt. Feeding is the key.

How Do You Raise Corruption?

There is only one lever, and Polygon states it flatly: “There’s only one way to level up corruption in The Blood of Dawnwalker: drink blood.” Two delivery methods, both confirmed:

  • Voracious Bite — a Vampirism ability you use on humans and animals, in combat or from Focus mode while exploring. It is also your main night-time heal (rank it up early — see below).
  • Vials of blood — lootable consumables. Polygon advises saving these for healing or crafting and only guzzling the surplus, because a wild animal is a free drink.

Two mechanics decide how fast the meter actually moves, and both are documented:

  1. Target size matters. From Polygon’s playtesting, “the amount of corruption you receive will vary depending on the size of the enemy… rabbits and rats will only give you a small bit of corruption, while larger animals, like deer or even humans, will provide you with more.”
  2. Full health is not a blocker. “You can still gain corruption even if your health is full, so make sure to use Voracious Bite whenever it’s up.” Vials work the same way — they still add Corruption at full health.

The Faster Grind: Transports, Vials and the Hastened Corruption Line

Beyond “bite the biggest thing you see,” VGC names a deliberate farm: while taking out Brencis’s Boyars, “you will also be able to interrupt their blood transports and stores… you can also collect and drink this blood yourself, greatly increasing your rate of Corruption.” That turns general campaign objectives into Corruption income for free.

To multiply the climb, take Hastened Corruption in the Vampirism tree. Polygon documents its full requirements and all three tiers (cross-checked against Hack the Minotaur):

TierRequires firstEffectCost
1a point in Nourishing Blood + Corruption level 1+30% corruption filling speed1 skill point + 1 time segment
4 (Overfeed)Corruption level 4Drink blood at full health to overfeed — a temporary health segment +50% corruption filling speed while overfed1 skill point + 1 time segment
6Corruption level 6+50% corruption filling speed and +5% vampiric health for each Corruption level2 skill points + 1 time segment

The compounding is the point: the higher your Corruption, the faster it climbs and the more Vampiric Health you passively hold. Budget the time segments against /guides/30-day-time-system/ — each tier burns part of your fixed 30-day clock.

What Corruption Actually Unlocks

The Corruption level is the gate, so the build’s goal list is simply the Vampirism nodes you want to open. What is documented on-site (see /guides/skill-trees/ for the full roster):

  • Voracious Bite — teleport behind a target, drain their health and restore your own. It is the night form’s main heal, so rank it the moment you can.
  • Shapeshift (wolf) — night travel at the same top speed as the human sprint spell; the on-site form guide confirms it is gated behind Corruption level 1.
  • Death from Above — an uninterruptible plunging strike that one-shots ordinary enemies and is the recommended boss-damage pick.
  • Piercing Shriek — reported by the build captures as a stun that reflects a portion of incoming damage for a window (percentages unverified); it is also the reward for drinking the Phial of Brencis’s Blood found in the /bosses/xanthe/ area.

Human Blood vs Animal Blood (and Vrakhir Blood)

Feeding has a moral dial and a mechanical tier:

  • Animals and enemies are the consequence-free source — PC Gamer tip 6: “Animals and enemies are a great consequence-free source of blood.” This is the safe grind.
  • Humans feed faster (bigger target) but risk the hunger-dialogue problem below.
  • Vrakhir blood is its own category: PC Gamer tip 6 adds that “some vampiric abilities are only accessible if you drink Vrakhir blood from the game’s boyar bosses.” That is a boss-and-story gate, not a grinding task — it ties this build to the campaign fights like /bosses/ambrus/.

Keeping the Beast on a Leash

High Corruption is pure upside in combat; the downside is social, and it is avoidable. VGC’s caveat: there “won’t be many consequences, as long as you keep your health topped up before interacting with humans.” The on-site form guide explains why — at low health in vampire form, the “give in to hunger” option can hijack dialogue and make the choice for you, killing the NPC. So: do your feeding, then heal to full, then talk.

Two perks blunt this further. Endless Hunger adds Vampiric Health segments, and PC Gamer tip 5 pairs it with staying in control: levelling it “will make you less likely to lose control and be forced to feed on poor humans in dialogue due to only having one segment left.”

Red icons = Vampirism. The goblet badge on a node is a Corruption requirement, which is why feeding — not quest completion — is your progression loop here.

How It Slots Into the Whole Character

A corruption build is still a two-form character. By night you run the Vampirism/corruption engine above; by day you still want Swordmastery (usable in both forms) carrying your human hours, which means the manual hunt on /items/swordmastery-manuals/. The full rank-by-rank ordering across both forms — including which night abilities to prioritise — lives on /guides/best-builds/; this page is specifically about fueling the Corruption meter that unlocks the night half.

Sources & Verification

  • Blood of Dawnwalker: What is Corruption, explained by VGC — the primary framing: Corruption rises when you drink blood / use Vampirism abilities; many Vampirism nodes can’t be unlocked or upgraded until it rises; increase it via Voracious Bite (incl. Focus-mode takedowns) and by interrupting the Boyars’ blood transports and stores; the “keep your health topped up” consequence caveat.
  • How to level up corruption in The Blood of Dawnwalker by Polygon — “only one way… drink blood”; Voracious Bite and vials; corruption scales with target size (rabbits/rats vs deer/humans); full-health feeds still count; only health-restoring vials add corruption (beast’s bane brew’s +10% vs animals, no corruption); and the full Hastened Corruption requirement + 3-tier table (levels 1/4/6, the +30%/+50%/+50% and +5%-per-level effects, and the skill-point/time-segment costs).
