FAQ

Do I have to fill Xanthe's Anger before fighting her?
No — she is the exception among Brencis's Boyars. Xanthe can be assassinated outright in the Svartrau City cathedral at night without completing any of her Court Activities. Doing so costs a full rank of Infamy instantly and forfeits the chance to ally with her against Brencis.
How do you actually damage Xanthe?
Clear her three Blood Guard first, then work on her stamina. A vampire shield around Xanthe blocks meaningful damage until her stamina bar is emptied; only then does an output window open. She interrupts with left-and-right blood whip strikes, and can counter and heal.
What is the Boiling Blood meter under her bars?
A timer sitting beneath Xanthe's health and stamina bars. If it runs down to zero, the blood inside Coen himself boils and bursts — the single largest threat in the encounter. Stalling and trading blindly are what let it expire.
What does Xanthe drop?
Drinking her vrakhir blood grants the legendary Phial of Brencis's Blood, and drinking that unlocks the Piercing Shriek ability; her corpse also carries the Corrupted Pendant. No HP value for Xanthe is published by any source we could verify.

Who Is Xanthe in The Blood of Dawnwalker?

Xanthe, “the Dark Mistress” is the eldest vampire in Vale Sangora and the third of the Boyar vassals (boyaress, vrakhir) serving the Knyaz Brencis. Her territory is the southeast of the valley, and she works from the cathedral complex in Svartrau City.

Her job is to give Brencis’s armies an unnatural edge: running strange experiments, expanding and supplying the Blood Guard, and excavating the valley’s ancient secrets — dig sites so contaminated they need to be purged by exorcism before they are safe to approach.

Boss battle artwork referenced by the Xanthe coverage

That background explains the fight. Ambrus is a poisoned logistics chief and Bakir is a tournament host; Xanthe is the one with an elite guard, a shield, and a mechanic aimed at Coen’s own blood.

Can You Kill Xanthe Without Doing Her Quests?

Yes — and this is the most important thing to understand about her, because it breaks the pattern the other two Boyars follow.

Normally the Court menu gates every Boss fight: activities pushed into a Boyar’s Anger meter until it is full (about 75% of his or her list), and only then does the boss quest appear. Xanthe is the documented exception:

RouteRequirementWhat it costs
AssassinationNone. She is in the cathedral openly — go at night, use Shadowstep to climb the scaffolding, and kill herInfamy jumps a full rank instantly, and you lose the chance to ally with her against Brencis
Court routeWork her 15 Court Activities (of the game’s 41) to fill her Anger, then run the boss-line quest The Cycle of LoveTime: most activities cost 3 time segments of the /guides/30-day-time-system/ budget

Her activity line includes Gargoyle Manufacture — escaping the astrologers’ trap and completing Home Sweet Home on the way.

How Does the Cathedral Fight Work?

Unlike Ambrus, Xanthe’s kit is documented — because it is unusual. She does not start fighting you, she cannot be damaged normally, and there is a clock on your own blood.

MechanicWhat it looks likeCounter
Three Blood GuardArmoured, two-handed weapon carriers, notably stronger than ordinary infantry — they engage before she doesKill all three first; do not try to path through them to Xanthe

Blood WhipsWhip strikes delivered from her left and right sidesWatch the side the whip loads on and move off that arc; do not stand in front of the wind-up
Vampire shield / abilityA supernatural shield keeps real damage off herEmpty her stamina first — the shield breaks and the damage window opens only once stamina is gone

What Does Xanthe Drop?

RewardRarityHow you get it
Phial of Brencis’s BloodLegendaryDrink her vrakhir blood; consuming the phial unlocks Piercing Shriek
Corrupted PendantNot documented beyond the nameOn her corpse

Those are the only Xanthe rewards named by the sources verified here. For the wider gear pool see /items/legendary-weapons/ and /items/emberforged-armor-set/; companion support for the Blood Guard phase is covered in /guides/companions/.

After the Dark Mistress Falls

Same two-way choice as Ambrus: kill her, or drink her blood for the phial. Beyond that, Xanthe matters more than her loot, because she is the Boyar with an alliance branch attached — whether you take her out early as an assassin, work her Court line, or keep her on-side all feed how the confrontation with Brencis plays out, catalogued in /guides/all-endings/.

The bronze trophy “Dark Mistress” is awarded for resolving the threat Xanthe has caused. Like the other two Boyar trophies it is compatible with an optional-kill route; conditions are in /guides/trophy-guide/, and the quest-ordering traps around her cathedral are in /guides/missable-quests/.
